Discover the History Behind US Stamps

United States Postage Stamps: 1901

The United States Post Office issued the Pan-American set of six stamps on May 1, 1901 to commemorate the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.  This was only the third commemorative set ever issued by the Post Office and the first commemorative set that used two colors.  The Pan-American stamps were very popular with the public when first issued, and continue to be highly sought after by collectors.  Although popular, these stamps were issued only during the period that the Exposition was open.  Fortunately, the Pan-American Exposition was open for six months and the stamps were available throughout the United States.

In 1901, Buffalo, New York was one of the largest cities in America.  The city had a strong economy based on their location and excellent water and rail transportation systems.  The Pan-American Exposition featured technologies such as a working X-Ray machine and electrical power generated and transmitted from Niagara Falls.  It also featured exhibits of worldwide cultures such as “Cleopatra’s Temple”, “Fair Japan”, “African Village” and “Beautiful Orient” as well as fantastic exhibits such as “Trip to the Moon” and “Dreamland”.

Buffalo’s Pan American Exposition also has historical significance as being the spot where President William McKinley was shot.  September 5th had been designated “President’s Day” by the Exposition (President McKinley has been a strong supporter of the Pan-American Exposition).  The next day, September 6th, President McKinley was shaking visitor’s hands in a reception line when an anarchist shot him.  He died eight days later and Theodore Roosevelt became president.  This event was memorialized with a plaque embedded in a boulder where the shooting occurred.
