International Civil Aeronautics Conference Stamp

The International Civil Aeronautics Conference of 1928 was held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of power flight.  Two stamps were issued on December 12, 1928 for this event, a red two cent stamp that featured the Wright Flyer, the Wright Brother’s airplane and a blue five cent stamp featuring a current (for 1928) airplane flying over a globe.  Both stamps also featured the Washington Monument and the Capitol Building where the conference was held (although participants traveled to a variety of other locations during the conference).

Held to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Wright Brother’s first powered flight, the International Civil Aeronautics Conference was a major event at the time and hundreds of delegates and dignitaries from the United States and worldwide attended.

The conference began with a visit to the International Aeronautical Exhibition that was being held in Chicago, Illinois, followed by a tour of Wright Field and the Army Air Corps Laboratories in Dayton, Ohio.  After these tours, the International Civil Aeronautics Conference, President Calvin Coolidge gave a speech to formally open the event.

During the conference, a number of presentations were given on the then current advances in aviation.  Topics included aeronautical research, international air transport, aircraft competitions and a variety of other topics.  A presidential reception was also held at the White House.  Attendees included many of the early pioneers in powered flight, including the only surviving Wright brother, Orville Wright..

A trip to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17th, the site of the Wright brothers’ historic first powered flight concluded the 1928 International Civil Aeronautics Conference.  This trip was scheduled to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the Wright brothers’ historic first flight.  The attendees returned to Washington, D.C. and the conference concluded.

Although the 1928 International Civil Aeronautics Conference has been long forgotten, the two well designed stamps commemorating the occasion remain a nice addition for both United States and Aviation stamp collections.
