Great Smoky Mountains National Park Stamp

US Postage Stamps: 1934

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Stamp

The black ten cent Great Smoky Mountains National Park stamp was issued on October 8, 1934 and is the final stamp in the ten stamp National Parks series.  All the stamps in this series are considered to be classics of US Stamp designs and are quite popular with stamp collectors to this day.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is located between North Carolina and Tennesse and includes over 800 square miles of mountains, forests and rivers. It has a diverse ecosystem and is home to over 10,000 different species of animals and plants.

Cherokee Indians originally inhabited the area that is now the park.  Europeans started settling the area towards the end of the 18th century.  Much of the economy was based on farming and logging, and as the population grew, so did the logging industry.  When the railroad reached the region, destructive clear cutting techniques became popular.  Citizens became concerned at the destruction of the region’s natural beauty and a movement to preserve the area was started.  However, much of the land was privately owned, not state or federal land.  This made it much more difficult to establish a National Park.  The problem was solved when John D. Rockefeller, Jr. made a large donation to buy the privately held land. Smaller contributions by others along with some federal funds allowed the remaining land to be purchased for the park.

At the time that this postage stamp was issued, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park had only been in existence for a few months.  A variety of improvements were made during the next decade by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Works Progress Administration and other programs implemented by President Theodore Roosevelt as a result of the great depression.  Many of the park structures and trails constructed during that period are still in use today.
