Atlantic Steamship Crossing Stamp

US Postage Stamps: 1944

First Atlantic Steamship Crossing Stamp

Issued on May 22, 1944, this three cent stamp commemorates the 125th anniversary of the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, traveling from Savannah, Georgia to Liverpool, England.

The SS Savannah was the first steamship to sail from the United States to Europe.  It left the shores of America on May 22, 1819 and arrived in England 27 days later.  Although the Savannah was steam powered, it also had the more traditional sails as shown on the stamp image, and used wind power for more of the crossing than steam power.
