Discover the History Behind US Stamps

United States Postage Stamps: 1944

In 1944, as the end of World War II approached, the United States Post Office released six commemorative stamps.  Not surprisingly, two of these stamps featured events that were directly connected with the war, the Battle of Corregidor and the final stamp of the 1943 Overrun Countries series, Korea.  The remaining four commemorated the anniversaries of American technological achievements that included the invention of the telegraph, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic, the completion of the transcontinental railroad and the first commercial motion picture parlor (then called Kinetoscopes).

Korea: Overrun Countries

Transcontinental Railroad: 75th Anniversary

First Steamship to Cross the Atlantic: 125th Anniversary

The Telegraph: 100th Anniversary

Battle of Corregidor / Philippines

Motion Pictures: 50th Anniversary
