The Doctors / AMA Centennial Stamp

The Doctors StampThis commemorative United States stamp, known as the “Doctors” was issued on June 9, 1947 to honor all doctors and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Medical Association in 1847.  The American Medical Association (AMA) was founded by Nathan Davis with the goal of creating an association that would improve the medical education in the United States  (Davis had only attended six months of college before becoming a medical apprentice).  The organization was a success and has become the preeminent medical organization in America.   The stamp design is based on the English painter Sir Luke Fildes 1891 painting, “The Doctor”.  An interesting side note is that the same painting was used two years after the stamp was issued in a political advertising campaign against a national health care proposal put forth by Harry S. Truman.
