Everglades National Park Stamp

Everglades National Park StampThe bright green Everglades National Stamp was issued on December 5, 1947 to commemorate the opening of the park of the same name a day later.  Located in Florida, the Everglades National Park covers about 2,400 square miles and is the base of the greater everglades system that encompasses 18,000 square miles.  The everglades are wetlands that were created by a river flowing slowly out of Lake Okeechobee into Florida Bay.  As the population of Florida grew during the early part of the 1900s, many parts of the everglades were drained or filled in for development and farming.

By the early 1920s, naturalists became concerned over the damage.  A commission was formed by the Florida state legislature in 1928 to study the feasibility of protecting the everglades.  Although there were a number of conflicts with business interests, a bill creating the new National Park was signed in 1934.  However, no money was committed to the creation of the park and it was not until 1947 that the necessary funds became available to purchase privately owned land and establish the park in more than name.  The original park included 1,300,000 acres, but over the years additional land was purchased and the park grew to its present size.  In addition to being an United States National Park, Everglades National Park is also an International Biosphere Reserve and an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
