Thomas Edison StampIssued on February 11, 1947, this addition to the famous American series features inventor Thomas Edison.  This commemorative stamp was issued on the 100th anniversary of Edison’s birth in 1847.  One of the most prolific inventors of all time, Edison invented the first commercially practical electrical incandescent light bulb, talking motion pictures and the phonograph.  He was also a shrewd businessman and founded the Edison General Electric Company, now known as General Electric.  He also built the first electrical power plant in New York City in 1882.  His companies were some of the first to use mass production techniques and also employed teams of researchers to invent and refine new products.
