US Postage Stamp Centennial Stamp

US Stamp Centenary StampIssued on May 17, 1947, the US Postage Stamp Centenary stamp was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first two United States postage stamps every printed by the Post Office (earlier “provisional” stamps had been printed by local governments and others).  The stamp displays some of the varied ways that mail was delivered over the years and includes the Pony Express, locomotives, steamships and a current (for 1947) plane.

The stamp also includes George Washington and Benjamin Franklin on its design.  These were the two famous Americans that were portrayed on the first stamps.  Benjamin Franklin was also the first Postmaster General of the United States and instrumental in setting up the early US post office system. A companion Souvenir sheet was also issued two days later featuring reproductions of the first two stamps, although the colors used were different.
