USS Constitution: 150th Anniversary Stamp

USS Constitution StampThis stamp was issued on October 21, 1947, commemorating the launching of the USS Constitution on the same date in 1797.

The USS Constitution or “Old Ironsides” as it is affectionate nicknamed, is the world’s oldest commissioned ship still afloat.  It was one of the original six wooden hulled, three masted, heavy frigates built by the new United States government.  George Washington himself named the ship after the famous document, and since that time the ship has served the United States in the keeping trade routes free of pirates and in the 1812 War against Britain.  In fact, it received its nickname, “Old Ironsides”, in the War of 1812 when it defeated five British warships.  The USS Constitution remained in active service until 1881, and was officially dedicated as a museum ship in 1907.  The ship is currently berthed at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston Massachusetts and can be visited by the public.
