United States Postage Stamps: 1951

Only six commemorative stamps were released in 1951.  Five of the stamps commemorate anniversaries including Nevada’s first settlement, the Landing of Cadillac in what would become the city of Detroit, Colorado Statehood, the Battle of Brooklyn and the founding of the American Chemical Society.  Interestingly, although 1951 was the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, no stamp was released commemorating this event, although the Battle of Brooklyn is related to this event.  A stamp was also issued to honor the final gathering of the United Confederate Veterans, a companion stamp to one that honored Union Veterans that was issued in 1949.
