Andrew W. Mellon Stamp

Andrew W. Mellon StampCommemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Andrew W. Mellon, this stamp was issued in Washington, D.C. on December 20, 1955.

Andrew Mellon was one of the world’s most wealthy men during his life time and also served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932.  During his terms as Secretary of the Treasury he was extremely popular as the economic boom of the 1920s took place.  He also lowered tax rates during his terms.  When the financial system collapsed in 1929, his policies were no longer popular.  He resigned as Treasury Secretary in 1932 and took the post of Ambassador to the United Kingdom.  He held this post for a year before retiring from public office.

Mellon was also an active philanthropist and was founded the Andrew W. Mellon foundation and was instrumental in establishing the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. by donating 15 million dollars towards its development.  Mellon died in 1937, but his foundation is still active and supports a variety of charitable causes such as the performing arts, museums and education.
