Christmas - Madonna & Child Stamp

US Postage Stamps: 1966

Christmas - Madonna & Child Stamp

The 1966 Christmas stamp was issued on November 1, 1966, fittingly in Christmas, Michigan.  The stamp features a painting of the Madonna and Child by Hans Memling, a Flemish Renaissance painter.  The original painting, “Madonna and Child with Angels” resides in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

The Madonna and Child Christmas stamp was one of the more elaborately printed stamps of the time, requiring three different presses to print.
