Indiana Statehood Stamp

Released on April 16, 1966, this stamp was issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Indiana’s Statehood in 1816.

Indiana was originally part of the large Northwest Territory that encompassed an area that would eventually become a number of states.  The Indiana Territory was formed when Ohio separated from the territory.  In 1805 the Michigan Territory split off from the Indiana Territory leaving essentially the borders of what would become the state.  Eleven years later the territory became the 19th State.

Prior to the Civil War, Indiana was primarily an agricultural State.  However, after the conclusion of the war, Indiana’s industry grew and by the time the Indiana stamp was issued, Indiana had become an industrial powerhouse.
