Mary Cassatt Stamp

The Mary Cassatt stamp was issued on November 17, 1966 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth.

Mary Cassatt was an American Impressionist painter.  Cassatt began her art career as a student in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, but was disappointed at the instructor’s attitude towards female students.  She left the Academy and moved to France where she met other famous artists of the time such as Degas, Monet, Renoir and Pissarro.

Although she is known as an Impressionist, she continued to refine her techniques over the years and towards the end of her career she had developed a simpler style and did not consider herself an Impressionist.

In addition to her paintings, Cassatt is also known for mentoring young American artists and being active in the creation of art museums throughout the United States.
