Plant for a More Beautiful America Stamp

The Plant for a More Beautiful American stamp was issued on October 5, 1966 as part of Lady Bird Johnson’s “Keep America Beautiful” program.

Lady Bird Johnson was the wife of President Johnson and was active in the movement to beautify America by rerouting power lines underground, removing billboards, developing anti-pollution programs, planting flowers and ornamental plants, and many other beautification projects.

The stamp was designed by Gyo Fujikawa and shows the Jefferson Memorial, the Tidal Basin and blossoms on a cherry tree.  This stamp was not the last “Keep America Beautiful” stamp issued by the Post Office.  A set of four stamps was issued in 1969 on the same theme and included “Plant for More Beautiful Streets”, “Plant for More Beautiful Highways”, “Plant for More Beautiful Parks” and “Plant for More Beautiful Cities”.
