Sixth International Philatelic Exhibition Stamp

US Postage Stamps: 1966

Sixth International Philatelic Exhibition Stamp

The Sixth International Philatelic Exhibition (or SIPEX for short) stamp was issued on May 21, 1966 to commemorate the opening of the exhibition of the same name.

The Sixth International Philatelic Exhibition was held at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC from May 21st to May 30th.  The crisp and bold design of the stamp was created by Thomas F. Naegele (although the companion souvenir sheet incorporating the Naegle stamp was designed by Brook Temple).  Although  the SIPEX stamp itself had a fairly average print run of 122 million, combined sales of the stamp and the souvenir sheet exceeded all other stamps that year except for the Madonna and Child Christmas stamp.
