US Savings Bonds / Servicemen Appreciation Stamp

This stamp, issued on October 26, 1966, commemorates two different subjects, US Servicemen and the 25th anniversary of the United States Savings Bond program.

An interesting fact about this stamp is that the US Servicemen component was proposed by a group of students at North Junior High School who wanted to issue a patriotic stamp that would honor members of the United States military.

The stamp design is based on Bob Noble’s photograph of the United States flag and the Statue of Liberty that first appeared in the New York Herald Tribune.  The actual art on the stamp was created by Stevan Dohanos, a member of the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee at the time.
